Douglas Lumsden has said he is “honoured” to have been officially sworn in as the new MP for Aberdeen South after securing a resounding victory in last week's by-election.
Douglas formally took the oath in the House of Commons on Monday, marking the start of his role representing Aberdeen South at Westminster.
Douglas won the by-election by more than 6,000 votes, securing almost half of all votes cast and defeating the SNP in what he described as a clear message from local voters about the future of the North Sea energy industry.
Following his swearing-in, Douglas said the result demonstrated the strength of feeling among residents who want governments to back oil and gas production and protect jobs across the North East.
He pledged to be a strong voice for Aberdeen South in Parliament and to stand up for workers and businesses affected by the ongoing decline of the North Sea sector.
Douglas Lumsden MP said: “I am honoured to have been officially sworn in as Aberdeen South’s new MP.
“I thank everyone who voted for me in last week’s by-election. I will not let down my constituents.
“Voters in Aberdeen South sent the loudest possible message to Labour and SNP governments that their war on oil and gas must end.
“Whoever the next Prime Minister is, and it is increasingly likely it will be Andy Burnham, must get Britain drilling again.
“The oil and gas industry has been shamefully abandoned by SNP and Labour politicians. As Aberdeen South’s MP I will never stop championing oil and gas workers. We simply cannot continue losing 1,000 jobs a month from the sector.
“The rapid decline in the North Sea is having a devastating impact across the city of Aberdeen with businesses being hit hard by the huge job losses and lack of investment.
“I urgently want to reverse this situation and ensure that Aberdeen is thriving, rather than barely surviving.”
Douglas is looking forward to getting to work in Westminster and fighting for the interests of Aberdeen South from day one.
